What City In Mississippi Is Closest To Memphis?

As one of the largest cities in the Southeast and the home of major employers such as FedEx, AutoZone and International Paper, Memphis has a lot to offer. If you’re moving to the area for work, however, there are a number of reasons why you might want to expand your home search outside of the city itself. Of course, there are cost-of-living concerns to think about, but you also may be looking for a different type of lifestyle than you’d find in an urban environment. Maybe you’re a parent with young children who wants a quiet neighborhood for your kids: You might want to purchase a house in the suburbs as an investment for the future.

No matter what reasons you may have for wanting to live outside of Memphis, the good news is that you have plenty of options. The city’s location in the far southwest corner of Tennessee means you don’t even necessarily have to live in the same state to benefit from everything Memphis can provide. For instance, there are a number of communities just over the border in Mississippi that could be more to your liking. What city in Mississippi is closest to Memphis? There are several that are only a short commute from the metropolitan area, so read on to learn a little more about some of the best Memphis suburbs in Mississippi.

Southaven, Mississippi

Located just south of the greater Memphis area in DeSoto County, Southaven was the second-largest suburb of the city as of the last census. With a population of more than 56,000, this community has all the features one might expect from a modern city of its size. These include conveniences such as parks and shopping centers featuring major national retail chains. It’s also home to the Memphis Hustle, the minor-league affiliate of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. The BankPlus Amphitheater is a venue that regularly hosts outdoor concerts and other entertainment and is expected to be expanded to 9,600 seats by 2023.

How far is Southaven, Mississippi, from Memphis, Tennessee? You’ll have a relatively short commute into the city if you choose to make your home here — it’s only about 14 miles south of the downtown and about six miles from Memphis International Airport. The I-59/I-69 freeway is the main connection between the two communities.

Olive Branch, Mississippi

To the east of Southaven is the city of Olive Branch. This community has become an increasingly popular option for those living within the greater Memphis area, with the population growing significantly over the past few decades. At last count, more than 39,000 people live here, and many choose to do so because of the area’s small-town feel. If you’re thinking about moving here and commuting to your job in the city, be aware that it can take at least half an hour to get downtown via I-240 or US-78. During rush hour, the trip can last as much as 50 minutes, so you’ll have to balance the quiet of living in the country with more time spent in the car.

Horn Lake, Mississippi

Horn Lake is nestled to the west of Southaven, about 15 miles from downtown Memphis. It’s connected to the metropolitan area by U.S. Route 51, which makes up most of the community’s eastern border. The population at last count was more than 26,000 people. Horn Lake features numerous parks and historic sites, including a ranch once owned by Elvis Presley. Its proximity to Southaven means living here also gives you easy access to all the shopping, dining and entertainment options in that city, as well.

Hernando, Mississippi

Further south along I-55 is the city of Hernando. The county seat of DeSoto County, it has a population of more than 17,000. The relatively small size of this suburb means you can enjoy a small-town atmosphere that still provides you with conveniences such as shopping and public parks. Because it is a short distance from I-55, you can expect to spend less than 45 minutes driving to or from Memphis if you choose to live here.
