How to Pack China for Moving

Moving delicate china can be nerve-wracking, especially if your pieces hold sentimental value. Having worked with Memphis’ expert movers on numerous relocations, I’ve learned valuable techniques for protecting these fragile items. This guide shares practical tips for packing your fine china to ensure it reaches your new home intact and ready to display.

Choosing the Right Packing Supplies

Start with quality packing supplies – this isn’t where you want to cut corners. Hunt down sturdy boxes in various sizes for different pieces of your collection. Stock up on plenty of packing paper – you’ll use more than you think. Grab some bubble wrap for extra-delicate items like teacups and those fancy serving pieces with handles.

Cell dividers or cardboard grids work wonders for keeping plates from shifting against each other. Reinforce box bottoms with extra tape – a split box can spell disaster for your grandmother’s teapot. Mark each box clearly so you know exactly what’s inside without having to open it. Good supplies might cost a bit more upfront, but they’re much cheaper than replacing broken heirlooms.

Organizing and Sorting Your China

Before you wrap a single plate, take time to sort everything. Group your pieces by how fragile they are and their size. Put those paper-thin teacups in one area and sturdier serving dishes in another. This helps you plan which items need extra padding and which boxes they’ll fit into best.

I learned this the hard way when I packed a delicate sugar bowl with heavier plates – it didn’t survive the trip. Sorting first helps you visualize how to pack each box most efficiently while keeping your precious items safe. Trust me, this step saves time and prevents heartache later.

Wrapping Individual Items Securely

This is where patience pays off. Spread a clean sheet of packing paper on a flat surface – your dining table works great. Place your china piece in the center and fold the corners over it, making sure no part remains exposed. Secure with a bit of tape. For anything with handles or spouts, add bubble wrap for extra protection.

I like to write what’s inside each bundle with a marker – makes unpacking much less stressful. Don’t rush this step. The few extra minutes spent carefully wrapping each piece can save hours of heartache over broken treasures. Remember that properly wrapped items shouldn’t rattle when shaken gently.

Packing China in Boxes Safely

After wrapping each piece, it’s time to box everything up. Create a cushion at the bottom of each box using crumpled packing paper – at least 3 inches thick. Place your heaviest wrapped items in first, along the bottom. Add medium-weight pieces next, finishing with the lightest items on top.

Stuff any gaps between pieces with more paper – movement inside the box leads to breakage. Once the box is about full, add another thick cushioning layer before closing. Don’t overfill boxes with china – half-full is often safer than packed tight. Give each box a gentle shake test before sealing – if you hear movement, add more padding.

Labeling and Handling Fragile Boxes

Clear labeling saves heartache. Mark “FRAGILE” in bold letters on every side of your china boxes. Draw arrows showing which side should stay up. Note precisely what’s inside each box – “Grandmother’s Blue Teacups” is much more effective than just “Kitchen.” When moving day comes, carry these boxes yourself if possible, using both hands and keeping them close to your body.

Never stack anything heavy on china boxes, even if they seem sturdy. Place them in the moving truck where they won’t shift during transit – against walls or wedged between soft items works well. Remember that even the best-packed china can break if the box gets dropped or crushed.
